“Room in Heaven for Me”

Key: A

Recorded August 12th, 2011

Well, we’re getting this one in under the wire—didn’t want to break our streak of a song a day. We spent a few days at Fran’s sister’s in Connecticut, swimming in the Sound and eating unhealthy food (don’t go to Bishop’s Orchards while hungry! You will leave with four buckets of fried chicken, 36 apple-cider doughnuts, and some chutney.)

We returned to a hot apartment in Brooklyn this evening and realized we hadn’t recorded “Room in Heaven for Me”; problem: this is a call-and-response song.  Leigh views simultaneously singing and playing the bass as a task as difficult as, say, playing the bass while vacuuming the car. So, with no guest stars, Fran spent a happy hour harmonizing with himself and fiddling in Garage Band.

It’s August in New York, so the windows were thrown wide. The sounds of passing trucks and cicadas, or maybe katydids (what’s the difference?) add some, uh, context and texture to the song. (Yes, context and texture! Not flaws.) The baby, distracted by a green rubber car, kindly didn’t scream while we recorded.

And now for a snack of doughnuts and chutney.
