“The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers in Texas”
Recorded in August, 2011.
CAUTION! THIS RECORDING CONTAINS YODELS.
Ah, yes… The flip side of “Jimmie Rodgers Visits the Carter Family.” This one has the Carters “visiting” Jimmie and his “Mother” in “Texas” (apparently with a fussy baby in tow).
The corn is thick here, folks, and I cannot act (as will become immediately apparent upon listening) but this misguided “skit” did offer a chance for me to sing “T for Texas” with Jen.
The Cast:
Fran as Jimmie Rodgers
Jen as Sara Carter
Charles as A.P. Carter
Leigh as Maybelle Carter
Li’l Ben as the fussy baby
Leigh wants to add: I think it’s a triumph that we managed to make the skits precisely as awkward as the original recordings. I’m pretty sure the Carters did not want to do this—Jimmie Rodgers sounds cool with it, but he was a more natural ham. Our favorite line in (yesterday’s skit) is Jimmie saying, “how about a little ol’ sure enough ridiculously harmonizing around here?”
Anyway, these two skits have been weighing us down—we recorded them in August, for heaven’s sake!—and we’re glad to move on. Coming up, four great songs featuring Jen Larson and Nancy Hunt doing a little ol’ sure enough ridiculously harmonizing.
