The new plan
As we’ve said before, Fran can’t play the guitar right now. This means relying on the kindness of rhythm guitarists to come over and play with us, which isn’t happening super often these days. Means we don’t play any Carter songs just the two of us. We tried Fran singing and me playing the bass, but that’s just weird.
So we’ve hit on this plan: I learn to play the guitar and Fran plays the...
New Year's Day
It’s New Year’s day, but the baby doesn’t know that, so he started his 6:30 a.m. yodeling right on time. I went to a games party last night at my friend Melissa’s; she made a special cocktail, something with gin, I dunno. Fran and I have been pretty health-kicky lately, all herbal tea and yoga and mindfulness, so the gin thingy, maybe there was champagne at midnight...

In the meantime, a gig at Jalopy!
Fran’s got a gig at Jalopy this Tuesday night (October 11th) singing his own smokin’ songs. It also happens to be our second wedding anniversary. He’s sharing a bill with Lon and Lis Williamson, terrific singer-songwriters up from Florida. (They actually hosted our wedding on their property at Gatorbone Lake, so we’ll feel extra affectionate toward them on our anniversary.)...

Rain, Rain, Rain, Pain, Pain, Pain
It is raining. Leigh just left to go pick up the bass, which has been in the shop. The baby is napping. He has a cold. I have a neck injury that makes doing things like typing and playing guitar really painful. So the Carter Project is on hold. I did manage to play a show last Tuesday with Charles at Jalopy, but it was difficult.
We're still here!
We haven’t forgotten about this project, we’re just on hiatus due to a neck injury. We’ll return when the drugs kick in.

Our New "Field Office"
We’ve established our first Field Office for the Carter Family Project at the Van Horn Sandwich Shop, a few doors down from us here on Court Street. They do great versions of the kind of food we grew up consuming: fried fish and fried chicken, beans, key lime pie, and hush puppies.
The owners, Jacob Van Horn and Rick Hauchman, and the waitress, Erin Griffin, are all from Chapel Hill, North...
Correction
The baby is NOT happily eating his dinner. He is throwing it on the floor.
A Strange Day
End of August, bizarrely beautiful autumnal weather, and a transitional moment for the Carter Family Project. Leigh took the bass in to David Gage’s shop to have the bridge straightened and the fingerboard planed. They gave us a loaner so we now have a Kay bass standing in the corner instead of our usual Epiphone (which actually belongs to John Cleveland but has been stored here for at least...

This came across our transom today—a folklorist at Western Kentucky University has been interviewing the founder and president emeritus of the Carter Family Fan Club. The recordings are exhibited at WKU for the next few months; opening reception is August 27th. We’ve half a mind to leap in the car, pass a night at the old homestead in West Virginia, and check it out…though we...
